Cyber Resilience Starts With Visibility
Defender Use Case | GitHub Breach
“GitHub has confirmed unauthorized access to its internal repositories after detecting a compromised employee device infected through a malicious Visual Studio Code extension, the company disclosed in a series of official statements on May 20, 2026. This allowed unauthorized access to internal repositories, as disclosed officially.”
Was your code, data, or credentials exposed ?
The Challenge
When GitHub disclosed unauthorized access to internal repositories, organizations around the world faced a critical question...
Without visibility, security teams are left guessing.
The Response
Lighthouse’s Cybersecurity Risk Management leveraged Defender to rapidly assess potential exposure related to the GitHub incident.
Using Defender's AI-powered threat intelligence capabilities, Lighthouse was able to:
• Monitor dark web activity related to the breach
• Search for indicators linked to customer domains, users, devices, and credentials
• Identify potential exposure of proprietary code and sensitive information
• Generate actionable reports for risk analysis and remediation
Lighthouse identified that the GitHub intrusion likely originated from compromised remote laptops running third-party applications, raising concerns that credentials may have been exposed outside the organization. To validate this risk, Lighthouse used Defender to scan the dark web for leaked employee credentials linked to the incident. In response to these findings, Lighthouse implemented policies to restrict local administrator rights on workstations, reducing the attack surface and mitigating the risk of similar attacks.
“ Defender identifies the person, the domain, the email, and the device a person was using when the information was leaked to the dark web. With the GitHub breach, we used Defender to ensure our code was not exposed on the dark web as the hackers were doing. Defender gave us visibility that would have alerted us to its exposure data/code for sale. This is the only way an organization can proactively protect and defend exposed data. ”
The Outcome
Using Defender, Lighthouse enables security leaders with:
• Faster incident assessment
• Actionable threat intelligence
• Dark web exposure monitoring
• Greater confidence in security decision-making
• Reduced time spent investigating potential compromise
